Welcome to the enchanted world of wood.
Wood is such a wonderful natural resource in its own right yet many furniture companies use any old piece for any old purpose. However, at The Timber Slab Factory you encounter a whole new mindset. Every piece of timber is meticulously inspected and individually selected for colour, grain and defects before it is used in our creations. This process is so strict that we reject more wood than we keep.
In the interest of forest preservation, the timber used is from salvaged trees imported from all parts of the world-Brazil, Peru, Canada, Africa, Europe, New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands and of course, some of the best Australian varieties are used. Many of these trees have been submerged in swamps for hundreds of years. Some of the timber is over 1000 years old!
The timber is then thoroughly dried to a point where it contains only 12% moisture or less (way above industry standards). In the case of Australian rosewood, we will air dry it for 7-10 years before it is used. This is important since furniture made from wood that hasn’t been properly dried, will have problems- the timber shrinks as it dries creating cracks and effectively destroying the furniture.
The timber is then crafted by some of the most talented woodworkers in the country. There is no training course for people like these. Their skills have developed over years of working with, and having a passion for wooden furniture. They put their heart and soul into their work and are justifiably proud of the finished products.
Rather than using screws, they use dovetail and Mortise & Tenon joints found in timber-frame buildings and in furniture of all ages. These are the hallmarks of fine furniture and make it strong and durable. That’s why your furniture comes with a guarantee that lasts your natural life.
All items are carefully hand-sanded giving them a finish like warmth of old leather, the luminescence of gemstones, and a readable story of its life as a tree. One by one, each is hand-sanded and polished numerous times enhancing the sheen of the wood giving it magnificent, clean, crisp colours and shimmering grain.
It is attention to detail and pride of workmanship means you are assured of absolutely top quality furniture that will last several lifetimes. And piece so totally unique, you’ll never see another like it.
